3.1. Devices used to measure brain performance

The effects of meditation on the brain can be grouped into the following two categories: changes in the state of the brain during meditation, and changes in the traits or structure of the brain induced by long-term meditation. Both meditation-related events and other activities in the brain are measured by Electroencephalography (EEG), and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). A brief description of each of these two principal instruments for measuring brain activity is as follows:

Electroencephalography

Electroencephalography (EEG) is frequently used by researchers to study and evaluate the brain of a person who meditates. Electroencephalography uses electrical leads placed all over a person’s scalp, to measure the collective electrical activity of the cerebral cortex. Specifically, EEG measures the electric fields of large groups of neurons. EEG is remarkably effective in measuring the collective activities of the entire cortex right down to the millisecond scale. Therefore, the results generated by this instrument are valid and reliable.
